The Great Spangled fritillary is a pretty groovy little orange butterfly. It has a maximum wingspan of about 4". Butterflies hatch from their chrysalis in the early summer where they can be seen flitting across the meadow. They mate and then the males promptly die. Bummer. The females however, hibernate in a crevice until August or September when they emerge and lay their eggs. Tiny caterpillars hatch in the fall and then overwinter, become active again in the spring, make a Chrysalis in summer and the cycle continues.
Such a far-out life cycle requires a psychedelic T-shirt, clearly.
